From the moment I began understanding your words, you told me I could do whatever I wanted, and be whoever I wanted to be. I believed you. You said it was both a blessing and a curse. I didn't believe that, but now I do.

When I was 7 you nudged me away from violin because you couldn't stand the screeching. Then you introduced me to the piano. In retrospect, thank you on both counts.

When I was 10 you told me to stand up to that bully in day camp, so I poured milk on his head. And then you stood up for me when the counselors called me a "problem child" and wanted to kick me out of camp.

When I was 12 and my brother died, I realized for the first time you didn't have all the answers, and that sometimes you needed me as much as I needed you. A month later when I broke my arm playing pick-up-and-slaughter four days before my piano recital, you encouraged me to try and play anyway. You took me to a different doctor for a more comfortable cast. I played the recital, and got a standing ovation. I began to learn that we were all much stronger than I thought we were.

When I quit the school soccer team, you sheilded me from the asshole coach, even when he came to our door to get you to talk me into coming back.

When I wanted to quit classical piano and join a rock band, you offered your basement as a rehearsal space.

When you caught me with drugs, you said you'd disown me if I ever did them again. I lied to you about that for a while. Thankfully, you lied to me about the disownment too.

When we talked about my girlfriend you warned me I was on my way to having my heart broken. I chose not to hear you. When my heart was broken, you came to visit me in LA. No I-told-you-so's, not even subtle or unspoken. You were there just to be there for me.

When my flight was cancelled, and I was stuck on a really late red-eye, you woke up at 4am to pick me up at the airport, on this, your special day.

I know in my heart that no matter what I do, or who I become, I will always have your love, and you will have mine.

Somewhere along the line you became my two best friends. Happy 50th, mom and dad. I love you.
