----- Above ... my niece ... the very last picture I took with my digital camera before it met an untimely end. May it rest in peace. As for my niece though, I made her smile, and she made my week. Is it just because we're related, or is she _really_ like irresistably adorable? (she's got me gushing and talking like a valley girl ... then again, the valley's only about ten miles from here ... but I digress) When I returned from DC on Monday night, I slept for one last night in my old bed. I was awakened at around 3am by a steady dripping sound. Investigating, I found drops of water falling from the ceiling, through the air conditioning vent, right onto the nightstand at the foot of my bed. I couldn't have positioned my camera any more perfectly. There was a nice puddle overflowing from the lens cap. Apparently my parents' homeowners insurance will cover it. Until then, I'm gonna have to find some creative ways to get some photos on this site. At 5am on tuesday, two hours after my camera went swimming, my cell phone rang. It was America West, telling me that my flight was cancelled. Half-asleep, I let them book me on a later flight. Mom and dad dropped me at Newark at noon, and the plane took off on time. I went a bit overboard on the free drinks, probably expecting another day of delays. Instead, everything went like clockwork, and I stepped out to the blessed sunny-and-75 Los Angeles afternoon and hailed a cab to band practice. We watched the video of the Best of LA festival, and marvelled at how much we're beginning to look like a real band. Almost _too_ professional to watch, knowing the insecurities that lie beneath the facade. If only I could project that kind of confidence in my daily existence, but instead I let the _real_ me shine through just a little too much, hence eliminating whatever attractive qualities I never had to begin with. Yes, I'm in one of those moods. Yesterday I returned to my LA Daily Grind, albeit with a greater appreciation for the weather. I remember reflecting on how routine my life has become out here, despite all of the "excitement" that fills in the cracks from time to time. I'm a slave to routine, and I believe I find comfort in it, if not a cure for an endless state of Lonely. Even my mom's been teasing me about it -- as they dropped me at the airport the other day, she just blurts out (in that heavy NJ accent) "So, ya still horny?" "What????" "Don't worry, you'll find someone." She smiled then, adding "... when you least expect it." And then she kissed me on the forehead and wished me a safe trip home. And I trodded off to my plane feeling like a toddler. When you least expect it... This morning I was presented with an official offer, on paper, for the new job in Malibu. I had just about given up on it, having immersed myself in a new project for my current employers this past week. It was all spelled out, from base salary to benefits to bonus schedule. It was almost too inviting to be true. I signed the paper. An hour later I was given my new phone number and a choice of corner ocean view offices. I was copied in email on the order for a G4 Cube, my future workstation. Everything moved very very fast. I drove to Santa Monica and officially resigned from my current job. I'll be working for another two weeks, finishing up the project I started in New York. On the 28th I start the new job. So much for routine, or complacency, or whatever. Why does so much still seem to be missing from my life? At least the journal's current. 10 august 1999: : didn't write 10 august 1998: modposternism : The floor plan is "enhanced" with meaningless diagonals and sharp turns, obviously created in the name of "dynamic space." And yet these elements do nothing to the human experience but confuse the user. [ swim back | email me | swim ahead ] |
