hello my name is
what you want it to be
either way it's me
geeku by me

It's friday the thirteenth, duran duran is playing, and I'm smack dab in the middle of a self-imposed mental sanity break, conveniently stretched over half of that "lunch hour" that I never seem to have time for.

I'm getting my hair cut in about an hour. My boss is telling me to get blond highlights, my parents are saying "not too short," and all I'm gonna say when I get there is "just do something to it."

Why doesn't it just all fall out already?

Cutting Crew -- "I Just Died in Your Arms." It's 80s flashback on the MP3 shuffle today. 80s. I had lots of hair then. I might have even had a mullett, but I can't remember. There was a point where I grew my hair halfway down my back. Man, was that a bitch to dry in the morning. And it kept on freezing on the way to school -- I was always afraid it was gonna break off.

GTE (oops, I mean Verizon) DSL man is in my office now ... he's humming along with the Cutting Crew ... oh boy, I guess he's about the right age ... and I'm trying to imagine him younger, in 1985, listening to this tune with his high school buddies. Hmm, at least he still has hair.

Ah, saved by Kool and the Gang. "ooh, la-la-la ... let's go dancin'" -- was that an 80s tune too? It's got me boppin my head, but the Verizon guy doesn't seem to be enjoying it ... oh, wait, he's coming around, now he's humming something halfway between the Cutting Crew and Kool and the Gang. Maybe he's just one of those always-happy people.

This song is stupid and catchy. It sounds like something I'd write. Am I insulting myself or Kool and the Gang with that statement?

Yes, no consistent thoughts are being formed here, but I figured I'd write anyway, just sit back and let the words flow (or stutter) out, killing time before my haircut, shabbat, tomorrow's gig, my birthday, oh great, "Low Rider" is playing now, and the Verizon man is whistling, not humming, this one. I should try and find something on my playlist that he'd hate, just to see if there's _anything_ in the world this guy won't hum, whistle, or sing along with while he's working.

I guess "You are the Sunshine of My Life" is out of the question.

Maybe I'll throw him some Radiohead -- old_Radiohead ...

No reaction ... he's quiet. Hah, I stumped the melodic Verizon man!

Shit, two choruses later and he's whistling to Radiohead. I can't believe this guy.

Heh, I'm gonna put Groaning Mona on next...

Anyway, I was saying ... um, not much of anything, in fact. Perhaps it's time to head for my haircut. First, let's see how musical Verizon dsl dude reacts to my latest mp3 selection ...

Not only did he start whistling early ... by the end of the tune he was singing along.

Hmm ... that would be "I Mean to Tell Ya" by Groaning Mona. (mp3 here) See us perform it tomorrow night (um, I _think_ it's gonna be in the setlist) at Paladino's, 6101 Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana at 8pm or so.

Shameless plug, I know ... off to haircut.
